A Cognitive Basis for Context-Dependent Utility

چکیده

This paper provides a new way to understand the concept of a utility function. By looking into the cognitive processes of information acquisition, I demonstrate how a utility function can be derived from deeper first principles. Crucially, assuming that humans possess only a minimal set of cognitive tools ordinal comparison and proportion (or frequency-of-occurrence) estimation, I show that the resulting utility of an object is isomorphic to the perceived rank of its magnitude within a reference set. By construction, the resultant utility is adaptive, and thus is evolutionarily advantageous. With perfect cognitive tools, this adaptive utility minimizes mistakes in binary choices. Cognitive imperfections may lead to suboptimal choices, as small objects tend to be overvalued and large objects tend to be undervalued. The proposed parsimonious model has features that are strongly consistent with empirical observation. This new analytical approach offers a bridge between modern economics, psychology, and neuroscience. Journal of Economic Literature classification numbers: D03

Strategic Competence and Foreign Language test Performance in Iranian Context

A number of studies have accounted the integral role of foreign/second language learning and learner strategy use. However, a few of these studies have considered the relationships between strategic competence and its use and foreign language performance (FLP). This study applied structural equation modeling to deeply investigate the relationships between test takers’ strategy use and their per...

Developing a New Algorithm for a Utility-based Network Design Problem with Elastic Demand

Developing the infrastructures for preventing non-communicable diseases is one of the most important goals of healthcare context in recent years. In this regard, the number and capacity of preventive healthcare facilities as well as assignment of customers to facilities should be determined for each region. Besides the accessibility, the utility of customers is a determinative factor in partici...

Emotion-Cognition Interactions A Study on Coping Responses of Methamphetamine Dependent Women

Introduction: Coping responses are complex dynamic behavioral reactions that involve reciprocal influences between emotion and cognition but cognitive studies in Iran have less emphasized coping responses of methamphetamine dependent individuals to distressing situations. To address this aim, the current study was designed to investigate the coping responses of a group of methamphetamine depend...

Variance in population firing rate as a measure of slow time-scale correlation

Correlated variability in the spiking responses of pairs of neurons, also known as spike count correlation, is a key indicator of functional connectivity and a critical factor in population coding. Underscoring the importance of correlation as a measure for cognitive neuroscience research is the observation that spike count correlations are not fixed, but are rather modulated by perceptual and ...

Improved Bayesian Training for Context-Dependent Modeling in Continuous Persian Speech Recognition

Context-dependent modeling is a widely used technique for better phone modeling in continuous speech recognition. While different types of context-dependent models have been used, triphones have been known as the most effective ones. In this paper, a Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation approach has been used to estimate the parameters of the untied triphone model set used in data-driven clust...
